The new national curriculum may be even more challenging. We have taken a step forward. We are developing. It’s really a big revolution. 她说:It is just a revolution without the first letter “R”. That is evolution. It’s a gradual change, not a radical change.
When we talk about the new national curriculum nowadays, we are not just talking about the English language teaching. We must treat students as persons with potential. We must try to help our students lay a good foundation, so that they can develop fully, physically, intellectually, morally.
Our students used to be in a passive position receiving whatever is offered by the teacher, by the textbook in the classroom. We want to change the situation, we want to make our students more active. We really want our students to be beyond the teacher, beyond the textbook and beyond the classroom. Sooner or later the students will step out the classroom. They have to use English in life. That’s why we should let them have some opportunities when they are students. So they should be given more freedom, more space. That’s our work. When they are asked to do task or project they have to spend some time outside class. Let them do brainstorming by doing warming-up before you start, before listening, before reading. This sort of activities will make the students more active. They should be the master of learning.
4、谈“teaching resources”
她说:The textbook work as the core of teaching resources. But nowadays the teacher has different kinds of textbook.
Nowadays, we do not rely on the single textbooks. We should try to meet the students’ needs, and provide various kinds of materials. We use these materials to enforce learning and teaching. Meanwhile, we must give the students a free rein according to individual potential.
The textbooks are use as a tool in teaching and learning. The teacher is the master of the textbooks, not a slave to it. The teacher should design teaching on the students’ needs. When you prepare your lessons, you can delete what is not suitable, you can adapt some parts, you can add something. This is your freedom, your space.
5、回应“A lot of teachers prefer to use classic literary works for textbooks”这个问题
她说:If you always teach them the classic literary, they can’t use the language in reality. This is a problem, so we can’t give the big proportion to literature. But literature is very important, so we still have a lot of tests adapted from the classic literature. The text book should be interdisciplinary, so the students can learn a lot, not just the language itself, a lot of knowledge. That can broaden their view.
We want to establish a better assessment to promote the students’ development. Allaround development put more emphasis on assessment during the course, not always after the course. Anyway, the purpose of assessment should help the students build up their self-confidence in learning. If you keep giving them very difficult problems of exams, they may feel frustrated, they’ll be discouraged. This isn’t our purpose. We want to encourage our students. They should be confidence and be interested.
Listening should be tested. You can keep a record of the students’ performance and give them marks. And at end of a term, you can give the students an oral test if possible. In Guangdong and Jingsu, they have been doing that for 5 years with very good results. If you don’t test the students’ listening and speaking, they may tend to ignore them.
Reading aloud and even reciting short dialogue, poems, plays and famous speeches is a very effective way to learn language. |
